BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not account for muscle mass, age, sex or ethnicity — talk to a healthcare professional about your health.
BMI formula
Body Mass Index compares weight to height:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² or, in imperial units, BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².
For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m gives 70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9.
WHO categories for adults
| BMI | Category |
|---|---|
| below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30 – 34.9 | Obesity class I |
| 35 – 39.9 | Obesity class II |
| 40 and above | Obesity class III |
The healthy weight range shown is the weight that would give a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 at your height. Some Asian health authorities use lower cut-offs (overweight from 23). BMI charts for children and teens use age-specific percentiles instead.
